Longtime Kawneer employee Beth Corl has earned a graduate certificate in Ethical Leadership from Christian Brothers University.  CBU’s Graduate Certificate in Ethical Leadership provides students with an academic and personal integration of ethics, leadership and service.  The program is designed for the executive or rising executive in all styles of organizations.  Certificate students are required to take nine credit hours of graduate study in the areas of leadership, ethics and service.

Oak Grove Central Elementary Teacher Brandy Bailey was recently honored with one of the nation’s highest teaching awards, the “No Child Left Behind 2006 American Star of Teaching.”  The award is given to one teacher in every state and the District of Columbia.  A committee of former teachers at the U. S. Department of Education selected the American Stars from among 4000 nominations.  U. S. Rep. Roger Wicker and top U. S. Department of Education officials came to Hernando to present Bailey with the award.

The City of Southaven received the Mississippi Municipal Excellence Award for City Spirit in recognition of the Field of Dreams ballpark at Snowden Grove Park.  The Field of Dreams is a baseball diamond with a rubber surface that allows children with disabilities to play baseball.  Southaven Mayor Greg Davis hopes that the award will show other municipalities in the state what can be done so that other cities may construct similar fields.

Edward Jones investment representative Milton Davis received the Jack Phelan Award for his outstanding sales and service efforts during the past year.  The award is named for the firm’s former national sales manager, and only 2516 of the firm’s more than 9000 investment representatives have received this award.

Edward Jones investment representative David McNeely has received the A. F. McKenzie Achievement Award for his outstanding sales and service efforts over the past year.  The award is named for Al McKenzie, who developed the firm’s training program during his nearly 60 years of service with Edward Jones.  Only 1566 of the firm’s more than 9000 investment representatives have received this award.

Several DeSoto County residents were nominated for the annual Athena Award, presented by the Southaven Chamber of Commerce on September 20.  The Athena Award is given each year to an individual who demonstrates excellence, creativity and initiative in his or her business or profession; provides valuable service by contributing time and energy to improve the quality of life for others in the community; and actively assists women in realizing their full leadership potential.  The following women were nominated for the award:  Margaret Ashmore, Goodman Oaks Church of Christ; Marge Lu Baker, Retired – First Woman Commercial TV Director; Sunnie Barkley, Principal, Olive Branch Elementary School; Amy Braden, Goodman Oaks Church of Christ; Greg Davis, Mayor, City of Southaven; Susan East, Lifestyle Transitions/Crye-Leike Realtors; Mellany R. Linton was presented with the Athena Award at the banquet.

The Mississippi Manufacturers Association will present the National Association of Manufacturers Award for Manufacturing Legislative Excellence to Senator Trent Lott and Congressman Roger Wicker for their outstanding work in the 109th Congress to improve Mississippi’s manufacturing environment.
