Congratulations!

Cheryl Beene, family/consumer sciences teacher at Center Hill Middle/High School was named Mississippi’s 2007 teacher of the year.  Beene is the first DeSoto County teacher to receive the award.  She will now compete for the national award, and will travel to Washington to meet President George W. Bush as well as First Lady Laura Bush and participate in a Rose Garden ceremony at the White House.

Parkwood Behavioral Health System recently celebrated 20 years of providing psychiatric services.  Governor Haley Barbour and other dignitaries came to the celebration.

The Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi held its annual Crystal Ball in January, when it presented the 2006 Community Star Awards.  Sunny Stuckey was named Woman of the Year; Lee Ashcraft was named Man of the Year; Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto was named Business of the Year; and the Olive Twigs were named the Non-Profit Organization of the Year.

Pat Nelson was honored with the distinguished service award by the Mississippi State National Alumni Association.  The award is given to alumni who go above and beyond in assisting the University.  Nelson has been instrumental in helping the local DeSoto County alumni chapter in fundraising, golf tournaments, and the basketball games played by the MSU team at the DeSoto Civic Center.

Sunny Stuckey was awarded an honorary degree from Delta Technical College.

Alcoa CSI – Olive Branch has received the Alcoa BU EHS Excellence Award.

Mississippi State Senator Doug Davis was presented with the “Legislative Friends of Tourism” award for his encouragement to the Mississippi tourism industry and actions taken to further enhance the state’s tourism product.  The award was presented at the Mississippi Tourism Association’s annual Legislative Luncheon.  Davis was honored specifically for his efforts in pushing general legislation to help promote the Tourism Incentive Program, which was a strong factor in the decision by Riverbend developers to locate the development in Mississippi.
