Education Vital to Economic Development

It’s no secret in DeSoto County that education is a vital part of economic development, and the speaker at the DeSoto Council’s Third Quarter Membership Luncheon/Salute to Education reinforced the importance of education to the general economy.

Martha Perine Beard serves as Vice President and Senior Branch Executive of the Memphis Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.  The Memphis Branch’s region includes west Tennessee, north Mississippi and east Arkansas.

In her speech to the crowd of more than 350 business professionals and teachers, Beard cited statistics that give evidence of education’s importance to the community and its economy.  These statistics include the fact that about one-fourth of Americans who have earning power have college degrees, and those with college degrees earn 75 percent more than those without degrees.  She went on to praise DeSoto County for its outstanding schools and for its community support of education.  “DeSoto County has a good story to tell,” she said.

Beard is the mother of three children, all of whom attended public schools.  She joked that she was jealous of DeSoto County’s Parent of the Year, saying she spent 15 years working with her children’s schools and was never honored as Parent of the Year.  “I want your award!” she said.
