The Southaven Chamber of Commerce recently held its annual awards banquet. This year’s Man of the Year honor went to Southaven Alderman James Stark, while Sherry Bennett, Director of Arts and Cultural Affairs for the City of Southaven, captured Woman of the Year. Future Electronics was named Business of the Year, and the City of Southaven was named Main Street Business of the Year.
Dr. Edith Robinson has been named Deputy Superintendent for DeSoto County Schools. She has been a teacher, principal and assistant superintendent for DeSoto County Schools since 1971 and has also served as chairman of the DeSoto County Foundation for Excellence in Education, Inc.
The Hernando Main Street/Chamber of Commerce recognized businesses and individuals that contributed to the quality of life in Hernando at the organization’s annual luncheon. Outstanding Partnership Awards were presented to AT&T, BancorpSouth, Entergy, Harrah’s Entertainment, Kawneer and the Mississippi Development Authority. Steve Beene of Great River Beverage was given a Sustaining Partnership Award. Katz Builders and Developers received the President’s Award, and the City of Hernando was given a Special Partnership Award. Marty Pickard was honored as Ambassador of the Year, while Mary Beth Parker received Volunteer of the Year honors. Design awards were presented to the following: J. B. Bell Award, Outstanding Residential Renovation in a Historic District, Pete Thomas and Eleanor Gill; J. B. Bell Award, Outstanding New Construction in a Historic District, Caffey Street Building, owned by Mickey Davis, Paul McElyea, Billy Myers and Mike Graves; Outstanding New Commercial Construction, Shoppes at Lee’s Summit; Outstanding New Institutional Construction, Sycamore Bank; Outstanding New Industrial Construction, Cole Tool Workers; Outstanding Commercial Renovation, Milam Building, owned by Smith Phillips Mitchell Scott and Nowak; Streetscape Improvement, Montclair Development; Heritage Award, Gale Center Renovation, City of Hernando.
