DeSoto County houses a branch of one of Mississippi's largest community colleges, and residents are within easy commuting distance to several Mississippi and Tennessee public and private higher education institutions, including the internationally known University of Mississippi.

Northwest Mississippi Community College is a two-year college offering more than 60 courses of study with seven academic divisions. The DeSoto Center offers many of the same courses offered on the main Senatobia campus, located 20 miles south of DeSoto County.
Northwest is accredited by the Mississippi Junior College Accrediting Association and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
The college offers associate degrees in more than 50 academic areas of study, including accounting, business administration, computer information systems, elementary education, office administration, secondary education, English, history, science, psychology, sociology, pre-law, and general college.
Technical programs include accounting technology, respiratory care technology, hotel and restaurant management technology, marketing management technology, funeral services technology, aviation maintenance technology, medical office technology, microcomputer technology, and office systems technology.
Certificate programs include practical nursing and commercial truck driving.

Located in the same building as NWCC-DeSoto Center, the University of Mississippi's DeSoto County campus offers courses for non-traditional students and others seeking professional growth and educational advancement. Selected courses on the junior, senior, and graduate levels are made available at the campus and are held in the evening following traditional patterns of the academic year. The unique partnership enjoyed by the University of Mississippi and NWCC offers DeSoto County residents the opportunity to obtain a four-year degree and even advanced degrees without having to leave the county. The "Two-Plus-Two" program, where students complete their first two years at NWCC and finish at the University of Mississippi, has been utilized by many area students.

Additional credit courses are available in special education, educational psychology, educational leadership, English, history, math, and sociology.
The main campus of the University of Mississippi is located within commuting distance, 60 miles south of DeSoto County in Oxford. Ole Miss offers bachelor's, master's, and doctorate degrees in a variety of disciplines and is the oldest university in Mississippi. The campus is home to the Center for the Study of Southern Culture, Mississippi's only pharmacy school, and a widely recognized school of law.
